About this work

Sobek was the ancient Egyptian god of crocodiles. As the “Lord of the Waters”, he was thought to have risen from the primeval waters of Nun, the oldest of Egyptian gods, to create the world and form the Nile from his sweat. By forming this river, Sobek brought fertility to the land. It only made sense to choose a female model to symbolize this.

The chestpiece and crown complete the artwork and were created out of the skeleton of an indeginous Nile crocodile.
